1003 Household Hints 76 - 84

Windows will require less elbow grease to close if you moisten a ray with some glycerin and use it on those dirty panes.  They'll stay clean longer too.

Think I'll have to try this one.

Shoeless Joe

We took advantage of some extra cheap tickets and went to see a local baseball game the other day.  They are a minor league - The Greenville Drive.  They played Augusta and lost, but could have won, it was that close at the end.  So it was an interesting game.  We had great seats, right next to the talent scouts and behind home plate where we could see all the action.  I've also posted a photo of our local baseball hero, Shoeless Joe Jackson.  A free lunch was provided for the first 350 people and we managed to make it in time, so it was a super thrifty outing, a nice relief and break from the unremitting grind of trying to find a job and having every thing we spend come out of our savings.

1003 Household Hints 58 - 67

Does Junior howl when you want him to wear rubbers?  Protect his feet from moisture by giving the soles of his shoes several coats of shellac.

The first time I read this, I thought it said give the soles of his FEET several coats of shellac.  I thought, well, life was truly different in those days.

Rock Group and mushrooms

Today is Monday and on Monday's I go to Rock Workshop.  It is Great!  Today I worked on stamps for the club, but the others are always so positive, I leave feeling better.

Today T brought in a big bag of mushrooms.  He grows and sells them at the TR Farmer's Market.  I guess he had too many this week, or they didn't sell well, but I am in heaven.  Fresh shitakes for lunch with leftover grits, omega 3 eggs and a strip of bacon each.

Yum!

Peach Stand

Yesterday we drove up to TR to take some of my homemade barbecue to some friends with health problems.  Then after visiting a while we drove a little further north and bought some peaches.  We have had almost none this year and it is near the end of the season.  It all made a pleasant ride and a Sunday outing.

South Carolina History

of microwaves and piggy banks

Go figure, you are trying to live on unemployment, or at least keep expenses down as much as possible, since unemployment pretty much just pays the health insurance you now have to pick up because of hubby's job loss and you are making a cup of instant coffee because instant is cheaper than brewed, with dehydrated milk I might add, and the microwave you have used for Years dies.

We don't Have to replace it, we can make do with heating drinks and breakfast oatmeal on the gas stove, and I'm all for not replacing it, but hubby wants to.

And it would be on Sunday when even the possibility of replacing it at an estate sale needs to wait until next Saturday.  I suppose we could try Goodwill or similar places but with a microwave there is always the possibility of importing someone else's roaches.

Oh well.  Yesterday was a depressed day, I spent it either reading or crying.  About 3 pm I came out of it enough to function a bit.

Don't know what triggered it or why yesterday.  Just one of those things, I guess.  Today I can move forward.

Was awakened at 5:30 am this morning by a thunderstorm.  Thunder had Dog jumping up on the couch with me, lightening was bright but the worst of the storm passed by south of here.

Just to make sure it wasn't the plug gone bad instead of the microwave, we tried the bread maker in the socket.  I almost never use it as no matter what I do, the dough sticks badly.  Socket was fine and at the back of the cabinet was found my old piggy bank that my grandfather gave me. Ah, you are going to say, we then found enough valuable old coins to buy a new microwave.  A couple of aluminum tokens and two quarters were the whole horde, sad to say.
My only grandfather whose lifetime overlapped mine died when I was 10 and I have nothing of him except a few pictures and this little Piggy.  So she is precious to me.

Mid Century Photos

Literary America

I really love this book.  The old black and white images are so crisp, you can take a magnifying glass to them and see more detail.  While giving a taste of American writers, it also gives a sense of place and time.

Day Trip - Davidson River

Yesterday we decided to take an afternoon trip to North Carolina.  I know it is the middle of the week, but since hubby is unemployed, he seems to take pleasure in being able to go and do at odd times after being such a nose to the grindetone 7 to 7 guy for so long.
We drove into Pisgah and found a place where I could easily get down to the Davidson River.  I would have liked to do more walking, but my knees just weren't up to it.  Someone had gone to a lot of trouble to haul rocks and build this circular dam/weir.  Why we had no idea.  Listening to the water was lovely, and we stayed until the mosquitoes and no see ems found us.
On the bank near the river, ferns and tree roots make a lovely tangle.
We treated ourselves to dinner out, not an expensive one, at this lovely place.  We enjoyed the food and certainly will go back.

1003 Household Hints 48 - 57

More old and interesting housekeeping hints.  I especially like 49.  When out of shoe polish, a handy substitute is paste floor wax.  It's neutral color makes it fine for dark or light shoes.

The black object to the right of the book page is an English leather bookmark I picked up at a garage sale last weekend.  Since England is the only other country I have ever visited and I don't know if I will ever get back, I satisfy my travel lust by collecting bits and bobs.

Exchange of Favors

Our neighbors gave us some carrots, apples and tomatoes yesterday.  I also got to play with their grand baby for a little.  He is a charming two year old, blonde and with lots and lots of energy.  I think he was doing his best to wear his grandmother out.

I'm thrilled for the tomatoes as I have been fixing tomato and pesto sandwiches for lunch every day with our fresh garden herbs.  But my tomatoes are taking a break from bearing, so I'm happy to have theirs.  I will be minding their house while they visit their daughter.  The apples and carrots were "for the rabbits", but even though they are a bit on the over the hill side, I am happy to have them.  You can eat cheaply in this country a long as you are willing to fill up on starches and fat.  But it is the fruits and veggies I miss and it is those that seem the most expensive part of my grocery budget.

Computers and dog walking

Woke up early and walked Dog 1/2 mile around neighborhood while it was still dark.  I like the time right before dawn.  I sat in the porch swing after listening to the birds announce that they too were awake.  Anyway, now having a cuppa and getting back to my task of trying to figure out how to make money.

Terrific Storm

We had a wild storm yesterday about rush hour.  As you can see it tore a 20 foot branch from a neighbor's tree. It is one to two feet in diameter.  A whole tree came down on the interstate not far from here.  Hubby was gone to a job interview and I sat on the couch with Dog, watching the pecan in the back yard execute wide swings.  They said hurricane force winds and it looked like it the way water was sheeting off the roof of the house in back of us.  Lots and lots of lighting and thunder, which, of course, was Dog's worry.  I was more afraid of one of the pines coming down.  Not an expense we want to have right now.

When it finally mostly stopped raining, just after dark, Dog and I went for a short walk.  The storm didn't worry the lightning bugs, we could see them rising from the grass.  Although I couldn't see the neighborhood creek, it was sounding full gallop, accompanied by a very loud chorus of frogs.

I've heard there was more damage elsewhere and power out, but this was our experience.  So far today it is cloudy with the promise of more rain.  The river downtown was near flood stage yesterday.  Seems like the weather is all feast or famine these days.

Vintage Cook Books - vegetables and potatoes

Japan's Ancient Armour

Found an interesting stack of these at an estate sale.  By these, I mean little tourist books from Japan published right after WWII.  I'd say they were trying to erase the really bad, bad image the Japanese had during the war.  The booklets are very well made and since hubby has lost his job, I am doing my best to up my ebay sales, make money any way I can.  Saving is good and we pinch every penny, but there needs to be a bit coming in also.

So, please forbear with me.

We have brilliant sunshine today.  Yesterday evening I went out to pull weeds for the rabbits and got thoroughly nailed on the hand by two large fireants.  Today the bites have blistered up a little more than usual.  Packed a lot of punch for such tiny creatures.
